Daisies

Věra Chytilová, 1966
Original with German subtitles
FSK 16, 73 min.
Recommended by Jakob Lena Knebl & Ashley Hans Scheirl

This experimental feature film is one of the major works of the Czech New Wave of the 1960s. Cheeky, colorful and anarchistic, the two actresses Marie 1 and Marie 2 wreck themselves and their environment in a highly entertaining way. Banned at the time in the ČSSR, this piece of anarcho-cinema from the filmmaker Vĕra Chytilová is a must-see!

Thu. August 5 | 9 pm

By the Time It Gets Dark

Anocha Suwichakornpong, 2016
Original with subtitles (engl.)
FSK not verified, 105 min.
Recommended by Otobong Nkanga

Set against the historical backdrop of the Thammasat University massacre in Bangkok in 1976, By the Time It Gets Dark tells the story of a young filmmaker who interviews a survivor of the student protest. Secret connections soon emerge between the two, and their different fates interweave. A great film about filmmaking and a piece of contemporary history.

Thu. August 12 | 9 pm

Upstream Color

Shane Carruth, 2013
Original with German subtitles, BBFC 15
FSK not verified, 96 min.
Recommended by Pamela Rosenkranz

Independently, a man and a woman are infected with a strange violent parasite. While breaking free together, they get to know each other in an intense way. With this film, Shane Carruth has created a completely new type of science fiction: melancholic, confusing and far from any clichés. "Upstream Color is marked by the feeling of loss as well as the longing to find oneself, to have a foothold somewhere again, to be someone." (Oliver Armknecht).

Thu. August 19 | 9 pm

Playtime – Tatis herrliche Zeiten

Jacques Tati, 1967
German version, FSK 0, 119 min.
Recommended by Anri Sala

This French-Italian comedy takes you to a futuristic-looking Paris of the 1960s. With humor and comedy, the conformity and sterility of modernity is taken for a ride. With its imaginative images and unusual soundtrack, Playtime – Tatis herrliche Zeiten is a masterpiece of absurdity.

Thu. August 26 | 9 pm

Yeelen

Souleymane Cissé, 1987
Original with German subtitles
FSK 12, 105 min.
Recommended by Otobong Nkanga

Young Nianankoro is on the cusp of adulthood. His father, a powerful magician, wants to prevent his son from becoming his equal by all means, even willing to kill him. Nianankoro's mother wants to prevent this by sending her son on a journey to acquire the knowledge that will allow him to be his father's equal. "Yeelen is a visionary film about the journey of growing up, a film of inner beauty that cannot be easily described in words, full of depth, intimacy and gentle humor." (Walter Ruggle)
A key film in Black African cinema.

Off-Stage until August 29 | daily

Open Air Concert

At Pavillon

The austrian band At Pavillon crosses all boundaries, both in the mind and musically - indie rock meets pop, funk and concentrated energy: optimistic, dazzling, glamorous and funky.

The Holy Spirit of Nothing

The six-piece rock band The Holy Spirit of Nothing with roots in Vorarlberg has been playing the country's scene venues for years. On their latest EP, which will be released on vinyl in August, the band scales back their gritty and psychedelic sounds and ups the tempo. Catchy and full of energy!
